What the dark B2B buyer journey means for modern website design
10 minute read
Wouldn't it be great if everything were obvious? Sure, a little bit of mystery is attractive when you're reading a novel or starting a new relationship, but business is different. Your C-suite wants to know about every single touchpoint that contributed to a sale and how they can do better.
I get it. As Partner and Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at Imarc, I want that, too! But it isn't always realistic because most B2B decision makers aren't shopping in a transparent way at all. They're following a dark B2B buyer journey.
They're making decisions about you before you even get to make your case! But what if there was a way to show your value every time, without the hassle of tracking down cold leads and warming them up? There is! It's called modern web design, and I'm going to walk you through the essential elements you need to know to close more deals.
The current B2B buying reality
This market is tough! B2B buyers get two-thirds of the way through their sales process before they talk to you.
It's not a surprise if you really think about it. B2C buyers have been shopping online for years, turning off cookies and doing their own research. It's about time B2Bs followed (why is our side of the house always a little behind the times?)
At least in B2B, people still contact you. B2C buyers mostly prefer to conduct their discovery, evaluation, and purchase all online, while B2Bs break it into two phases. 6sense calls them Selection and Validation. Let's focus on Selection first.
Consider also these U.S. results from their 2025 B2B Buyer Experience Report.
- Buying cycle length 11.1 months
- Vendors evaluated 5.3
- Evaluated vendors with prior experience 4.0
- Number of interactions per person, per vendor 16.8
- Buying group size 10.4
- Buyer-initiated contact 74%
- Buyers engaging external resources (analysts, consultants, investors, distributors) 78%
Those numbers tell quite a story.
The cycle is still long, but you may not be an active part of it unless you are shortlisted. You may never be shortlisted because association with a previously used vendor is a strong factor in the selection process. The buying group will be large, and the interactions will be many. The buyers will be aware that they need a solution, will have likely participated in a sales process before, but will need to be educated on the nuances of why they should choose your solution. Most importantly, the buyer is more than likely going to be the one calling or emailing you.
Today's B2B buying is driven by prospects, not you. Your job is to focus on quality, instructive content upfront, and prepping to validate what they find if and when they contact you.
Implications for B2B digital marketing and web development
6sense's research found that in-market buyers are still engaging with vendors at the same rate as before the rise of LLMs, despite dips in traffic. Traffic is dipping because those who aren't in-market yet are getting LLM answers, and that's fine, as they won't make a purchase until much further down the line.
Your company's website is the VIP. It should function as a 24/7 salesperson, helping visitors understand your products and solutions, and the value you deliver even before they contact you. While your potential buyers may be experts in their field, it's still your job to educate them about key milestones and how your specific process will work, so they can begin to trust you. That trust can help close the deal by eliminating any doubts about working with you.
It should also have a strong branded stake in the ground to set you apart from the competition. While others may offer similar products, there is no second "you," so don't forget the brand emphasis.
In fact, per The New Rules for B2B Marketing Leadership in 2026, 168 B2B technology company CMOs believe 40% of their budget should go to brand, but in reality, they are allocating only 25%.
How B2B organizations should respond to changes in the buyer journey
- Drive lead generation through value-based messaging that builds trust with buyers.
- Create intuitive, journey-based website experiences that guide users to relevant information quickly.
- Deliver clear, personalized content that enables buyers to evaluate solutions independently.
- Query LLMs to optimize for findability within them for awareness and eventual evaluation once the buyers are in-market.
- Make your brand the star of the story, showcasing all the goodness you have to offer.
- Don't gate resources that help with evaluation. You want buyers to find every detail they can.
These actions will help your website be discovered and evaluated so that you can be a vendor of choice. From a budgetary perspective, that means:
- Allocating paid media dollars to support your website's discovery (full-funnel performance marketing is the best choice).
- Set aside time and budget to follow an omnichannel marketing approach so that your brand is consistent everywhere and tells the right story to anyone who may be interested.
- Reserving marketing funds for your team to create regular, helpful content that provides buyers with a detailed experience that allows them to do their own due diligence.
- Investing in strategy work to determine ideal buyer journeys and user experience, along with the necessary web development work to bring them to life.
It's time to close that B2B deal
Once your website has helped get you vetted, you can use your pitch time to validate your position as a trusted partner.
Warning: Now is not the time to speak vaguely! You must demonstrate your deep knowledge and either cement or confront buyers' strong opinions, or they will pick someone else.
What does that mean? Come prepared to discuss in detail anything that could be found online (especially on your website) about your business. If you've done your homework, know that your buyer has done theirs as well. Have juicy details that support your case in your back pocket to show that potential buyer you are everything you say online. For example, you can highlight how you have solved the prospect's exact problem for someone else.
As noted above, analysts, consultants, investors, and distributors are still sought out by 78% of buyers. Make sure you know what they're saying about your company, and be ready to explain why they may have said it.
Another key area to place focus on is your use of AI. According to 6sense, "58% of buyers said that the need to evaluate how vendors are implementing AI inside their solutions caused them to engage earlier." In the world of digital marketing and anything digital, really, you need to back up your use of tools, and AI is no exception.
The final, and probably most difficult step, is this: live your brand. If what you're selling on your website isn't real, no one wants it, and they are smart enough to see through it. Sell the right solution to the right buyer. B2B is better that way.
